Their first week in Charleston was filled with activity for Emma and Josie. Emma found a housekeeper on Wednesday, which freed up a little of her time. She also took her laptop into Josie’s playroom and she did her translating from there. She still had a couple of deadlines to hit, and she wouldn’t let her clients down.
Finally, on Friday, she finished the first, and she knew that she was all right to spend a little time exploring the city. She put Josie into her car seat and put on the Beauty and the Beast DVD that Beau had insisted Josie needed.
From there, she started driving around the city. There were two places that offered dance classes, and though she was sure it was too late into the season to put Josie into the classes, she wanted to at least check them out and see what might work for them when new classes opened up.
The first place she went offered to let Emma watch the class, and they said Josie could participate to see if she even liked it.
As Emma watched her little girl twirl and spin with the others, she knew she’d found Josie’s dance class and her teacher. After the class, Emma asked a few questions and got Josie signed up for the summer semester. The teacher explained that the class would last for eight weeks, from June fifteenth until August fifteenth. Then at the end there would be a short recital.
“My husband is planning a vacation for us. What if we’re gone during class?”
The teacher—Mrs. Bradbury—smiled sweetly. “It won’t be a problem. I can see that Josie is going to be one of my best students. She’ll pick it up in no time.”
Emma smiled and nodded, leading her daughter from the studio. And now for the thing she’d dreaded. She really did need some new clothes so she wouldn’t embarrass Beau. She’d still wear her old worn out stuff around the house, but when they were going somewhere, she could make sure she wore something that wouldn’t look messy.
When she got to Dillard’s, she wanted to turn and run the other way, but instead, she and Josie walked in with their heads held high. She went through rack after rack of dresses, selecting some to try on. She found slacks and blouses, everything she thought she might need. She even got a few pairs of dressier jeans than she usually wore. They fit well, and she knew they would please Beau.
After she was finally done at Dillard’s, she drove to a children’s boutique there in town, wandering in and expecting to feel out of place. The truth was she felt anything but. She introduced herself, and when the saleswoman heard the name Bainbridge, she went out of her way to help.
Before they left the store, Josie had fun casual summer clothes as well as a few dressy things to wear. She got a say in what she wanted to buy, and she was thrilled to help shop.
